Claude Code reportedly got a new rule: original games yes, clones of existing games no
A widely shared post on X, viewed close to 900,000 times, says Claude Code picked up a new server-side instruction around October 27 under a flag named tengu_heron_brook, with no setting to switch it off. The quoted rule tells Claude to build original games, games in a genre and games made from the user's own designs and assets, but not a recreation of a specific existing game, even if it is renamed or called original. Anthropic hasn't publicly confirmed the rule, and developers are debating what it means for remakes, fan projects and modding.
Why it matters
If it holds, prompts like 'make me Flappy Bird' may get pushback, while 'make me an endless flyer with my own art' should still work. Game makers will want to frame requests around their own designs.
Who it's for
Indie game developers, hobbyists and students who use Claude Code to build or prototype games.
What it means for you
- Describe your game by genre, mechanics and your own assets rather than naming an existing title to copy.
- If you're working on a mod or a game you have rights to, say so and share your own design documents and assets.
- Watch Anthropic's Claude Code release notes and usage policy for any official word on game projects.
