The viral Claude Code trick that finds 'deleted' iPhone photos in your backup, and what's overstated

A widely shared post says that while Claude Code was checking a local iPhone backup on a Mac, it flagged a PhotoData/Thumbnails folder with about 152,000 files, including previews of photos the owner had deleted years ago. You can point Claude Code at your own backup to see what's in it. Be careful with the bigger claims, though: forensic sources say leftover previews are usually low resolution, and iOS sandboxing means a random app with Files access can't simply read that folder.

Why it matters

An unencrypted backup on your laptop holds far more than your camera roll shows, and anyone with access to that laptop can read it. A quick audit tells you what's there before you sell a Mac or share a computer.

Who it's for

iPhone and Mac users who care about privacy, and anyone about to sell or hand over a laptop.

How to try it

  1. Make a local backup of your own iPhone in Finder. Claude can only read it if encryption is off.
  2. Tell Claude Code to work read-only in ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/ and to count files under PhotoData/Thumbnails without copying anything out.
  3. Review what it reports, then delete that unencrypted backup and turn 'Encrypt local backup' back on.
  4. On the iPhone, check Settings > Privacy & Security and remove access that apps don't need.

Plan & availability: Needs Claude Code (paid Claude plans or API) and a Mac. Only run it on your own device and backup.

File counts and contents are one user's report. The claim that any app with Files access can read the cache is disputed and we couldn't confirm it.
