Claude Code's background subagents just got cheaper to run: each status update now costs about 99% less

When a Claude Code subagent runs in the background, it refreshes its one-line status every 30 seconds. Until now, each refresh re-read the subagent's whole conversation, which quietly ate into your usage limit. Anthropic's Claude Code team says Haiku 5.5 now writes that status from short notes instead, so each update costs about 99% less. The subagent itself still runs on its own model. Across whole sessions with background subagents, Anthropic measured about 5% less of the limit used, which works out to roughly 6% more prompts on the same plan.

Why it matters

If you lean on background subagents for long refactors, test runs or research, you were paying for status lines you barely read. This is a free saving you get just by updating. It won't double your limit, but it's around 6% more prompts on the same plan.

Who it's for

Claude Code users who run background subagents on Pro, Max, Ultra, Team or Enterprise plans.

How to try it

  1. Run claude update, then check that claude --version shows 2.1.316 or later.
  2. Keep using background subagents as before. Their status lines are now written by Haiku 5.5 automatically.
  3. Open /usage after a long session to see what's still using most of your limit.

Plan & availability: Live for most Pro, Max and Ultra users and for everyone on Team and Enterprise, in Claude Code v2.1.316 and later. No extra cost and no setting to change.
