OpenAI backed down: the Pro 200 cut is cancelled and Pro 100 and 500 get double the Codex usage
A day before ChatGPT Pro 200 subscribers were due to lose half their Work and Codex allowance, OpenAI reversed course. Codex lead Tibo posted that usage limits are doubling for the Pro 100, 200 and 500 tiers and Business Premium, effective October 29, and that Pro 200 won't be reduced after all. OpenAI's Pro tiers help page now says the reduction from its September 29 email is cancelled: Pro 200 subscribers on the lower allowance have been doubled to match the higher one, Pro 100 and Pro 500 get twice their previous Work and Codex allowance, and Pro 200 is open to new subscribers again at $200 a month. Existing subscribers get the change automatically, without waiting for renewal. The post, which passed 4.7 million views, also says extended limits for dots continue and dot usage stays separate.
Why it matters
Heavy Codex users were about to lose half their capacity for the same price. Instead they keep it, and the cheaper Pro 100 tier now gets twice as much work done for $100.
Who it's for
ChatGPT Pro 100, Pro 200 and Pro 500 subscribers and Business Premium users who lean on Codex and ChatGPT Work.
How to try it
- Open Settings, then Usage in ChatGPT (or Usage & Billing in Codex) to see your updated allowance. You don't need to cancel or resubscribe.
- If you dropped to Pro 100 to avoid the cut, compare it again: it now has twice its old Work and Codex allowance.
- If you left Pro 200, you can subscribe again from the pricing page at $200 a month with the higher allowance.
- If you buy credits, remember included usage is spent first, then your credit balance.
Plan & availability: Effective October 29, 2026, applied automatically to existing subscribers. Prices don't change: Pro 100 is $100, Pro 200 is $200 and Pro 500 is $500 a month. Plus usage is unchanged. Ultrafast stays Pro 500 only. Weekly GPT-6 Pro chat limits stay the same on Pro 100 and 500, and Pro 200's lower limit now matches the higher one. OpenAI notes double the allowance doesn't guarantee twice as many finished tasks. Confirmed on OpenAI's Pro tiers help page, checked October 30, 2026.
