OpenAI Private Intelligence: zero data retention, private inference and approval rules for business agents
OpenAI announced Private Intelligence, a set of protections for businesses that want to use its most capable models on sensitive work. The page describes strict limits on OpenAI's own access to business content, Zero Data Retention and Private Inference for eligible workflows, with Private Inference listed as an API preview built on confidential computing. Businesses own their inputs and outputs, and they decide what agents can access, which tools and actions are allowed, and when an agent needs a human approval. OpenAI says it built the controls with some of its largest customers.
Why it matters
Data handling is the main reason many companies still keep AI agents away from their most sensitive work. This puts retention, inference privacy and agent permissions in one place that security teams can review.
Who it's for
IT, security and compliance leads at companies using ChatGPT business plans or the OpenAI API, and teams planning agents that touch sensitive data.
What it means for you
- Read the Private Intelligence page and the linked data commitments with your security team.
- Ask your OpenAI account contact which of your workflows qualify for Zero Data Retention or the Private Inference preview.
- Before rolling out agents, write down what data each one may access, which actions it can take and which steps need a human approval.
