GitHub Copilot pricing and AI credits
Short answer
GitHub Copilot bills AI usage in GitHub AI Credits (1 credit = $0.01). Every plan includes a monthly allowance; chat, agent mode, code review, the cloud agent and Copilot CLI draw from it, while code completions stay unlimited on paid plans. Figures come from GitHub’s plans page and docs. Plans covered: Free, Student, Pro, Pro+, Max, Business, Enterprise (checked October 19, 2026).

How usage limits work
- 1 GitHub AI Credit = $0.01. Chat, agent mode, code review, the cloud agent, Copilot CLI, Spaces and Spark use credits. source
- Code completions and next edit suggestions do not use credits and are unlimited on every paid plan. source
- How many credits an interaction uses depends on the model and the task; a long agent session on a frontier model costs more. source
- The flex allotment is variable additional usage on top of the base and may change over time. source
- The allowance resets monthly. After that you can wait, set a dollar budget for paid usage at $0.01 per credit, or switch to a cheaper model. source
- On Business and Enterprise, licences contribute credits to a shared pool; usage beyond the pool is $0.01 per credit, and admins decide whether paid usage is allowed. source
- Budget alerts fire at 75%, 90% and 100% of any configured budget. source
Not published by the vendor
We looked for these on the sources below on October 19, 2026 and did not find them stated:
- The size of the AI credit allowance on Copilot Free and Copilot Student (the docs say only "an allowance").
- A per-model credit cost per request on the pages we checked.
- A fixed chat-request count for Copilot Free. GitHub’s marketing plans page FAQ still says “2000 completions and 50 chat requests”, but the newer GitHub Docs (plans page updated October 15, 2026) replace chat requests with an AI credit allowance and keep only the 2,000 completions cap. We follow the docs.
