OpenAI Codex pricing and usage limits
Short answer
Codex comes with ChatGPT plans and shares usage with ChatGPT Work. You can also run it with an OpenAI API key and pay API rates. All figures below are from OpenAI’s Codex pricing page. Plans covered: Free, Go, Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise / Edu, API key (checked October 17, 2026).
Plans and prices
| Plan | Price | What the vendor says it includes | Source |
|---|---|---|---|

| Go | $8/month | GPT-6 Luna at Standard speed in the desktop app, subject to rollout. | source |
| Plus | $20/month | Codex on the web, CLI, IDE extension and iOS; cloud integrations such as automatic code review and Slack; GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Luna; extend usage with ChatGPT credits. | source |
| Pro | $100, $200 or $500/month | Everything in Plus. Ultrafast mode on Pro $500. OpenAI says Pro plans currently have no five-hour limit. | source |
| Business | $25 per user per month billed monthly (2+ users) | Larger cloud VMs, admin controls, SAML SSO and MFA, no training on business data by default. The annual per-user price was not shown in the page text we checked. | source |
| Enterprise / Edu | Not published | SCIM, EKM, RBAC, audit logs, data residency. Flexible-pricing workspaces have no fixed rate limits; usage scales with credits. | source |
| API key | API pricing per token | Codex in the CLI, SDK or IDE extension only; no cloud features such as GitHub code review or Slack. Model availability follows your API key. | source |
How usage limits work
- Published estimates of local messages per five hours on Plus and Standard Business: GPT-6.1 Sol 15–160, GPT-6 Sol 15–150, GPT-6 Astra 5–45, GPT-6 Luna 350–3,000. OpenAI says these are not fixed limits. source
- Weekly limits may also apply, and cloud tasks may use more of your allowance than local messages. source
- Fast mode uses included subscription usage at 2.5x and Ultrafast at 8x the Standard rate for the same model. source
- Plus and Pro users who hit the limit can buy additional credits; any user can run extra local chats with an API key at standard API rates. source
- If you hit the limit during an active turn, the agent can finish that turn, subject to fair use. source
- Check remaining usage in the usage dashboard or with /status inside a Codex CLI session. source
- OpenAI recommends trimming AGENTS.md and disabling MCP servers you do not need, because every MCP server adds context and uses more of your limit. source
- GPT-5.5 retired from Codex with ChatGPT sign-in on October 14, 2026; API-key sessions are not affected. source
Not published by the vendor

- Usage limits for the Free and Go plans.
- Exact weekly limits on any plan.
- Enterprise and Edu seat prices.
- The annual per-user Business price (only the $25 monthly price was in the page text we checked).
