SynthID named one of TIME's Best Inventions of 2026
Google DeepMind's SynthID watermarking was named one of TIME's Best Inventions of 2026. Google says more than 180 billion images and videos have already been watermarked with it, which helps people tell AI-generated media from other content.
Why it matters
As AI images get harder to spot by eye, invisible watermarks are one of the few ways to check where an image came from.
Who it's for
Journalists, educators, brand teams and anyone checking images.
What it means for you
- Read DeepMind's post and the TIME list.
- When an image matters, check it with the SynthID detection tools Google offers.
- Remember a missing watermark doesn't prove an image is real.
Applies to: SynthID is built into Google's image and video models.
