Mask-based image edits with Nano Banana 2.1
Google released Nano Banana 2.1 on October 6, its latest image generation and editing model. Google says it beats its previous models across the board, with big gains in visual design, mask-based editing and subject consistency. Josh Woodward, who leads the Gemini app, called mask-based editing his favourite part.
Why it matters
Mask-based editing lets you change one part of an image while keeping the rest untouched.
Who it's for
Designers, marketers and anyone editing photos in Gemini.
How to try it
- Open image editing in Gemini and upload a photo.
- Mask the area you want to change.
- Describe only that change: "Replace the mug with a glass of iced coffee, keep lighting the same."
Plan & availability: Gemini app and Google's image tools; also in the Gemini API.
