Claude Coding

Change how Claude Code works with mods (or ask Claude to write one)

Since October 1, Claude Code supports mods: small TypeScript functions that hook into its events. A mod can rewrite a prompt before it reaches the model, block or retry a tool call, redact secrets from tool output, or add buttons and panes to the terminal or desktop app. Mods ship inside plugins. They are not sandboxed and run with the same access as Claude Code, so only install ones from sources you trust.

Why it matters

You can change how Claude Code behaves with a few lines of TypeScript, including adding your own safety checks.

Who it's for

Developers and teams who want to customise or lock down Claude Code.

How to try it

  1. Run /plugin in the Claude Code CLI (or open the plugin directory in the desktop app) to browse plugins that include mods.
  2. Or ask Claude to build one for you, for example: "Write a mod that asks me to confirm before any command touches files under config/production, then install and hot-reload it."
  3. Built-in features like /diff are now mods too, so you can switch them off in /plugin or replace them with your own version.
  4. On Team and Enterprise plans, the built-in sec-default mod loads first and stops other mods from overriding your permission deny rules.

Plan & availability: Claude Code CLI and desktop app (since Oct 1, 2026). Mods aren't sandboxed, so install only trusted ones.
