Use Codex to chip away at your maintenance backlog
OpenAI Developers shared how OpenAI's own engineers use Codex to dig through their codebase, find what needs attention and work through the maintenance backlog. It is a practical pattern for the boring work (dead code, outdated dependencies, flaky tests) that never gets prioritised.
Why it matters
Maintenance work rarely gets prioritised. Letting Codex find and size it turns it into small PRs you can merge between features.
Who it's for
Engineers and tech leads with a growing backlog of cleanup tasks.
How to try it
- Point Codex at your repo and ask: "List the 10 highest-value maintenance tasks in this codebase with file paths and why."
- Pick one and have Codex open a small, reviewable change for it.
- Repeat with one task per thread so each change stays easy to review.
Plan & availability: Codex in the ChatGPT desktop app, CLI or IDE extension on plans that include Codex.
