Let ChatGPT read your open tabs, or act in them, from the browser extension
The ChatGPT browser extension now opens a side chat beside the page you are on. It can use your open tabs, text you highlight and YouTube transcripts as context. In a Work or Codex chat on the desktop app you can @-mention Chrome, Edge, Brave, Opera or Vivaldi to have ChatGPT carry out the task in that browser, on sites where you are already signed in. By default it asks before it uses each new website.
Why it matters
ChatGPT can work with the pages you already have open and sites you're signed in to, so you stop copy-pasting between tabs.
Who it's for
Researchers, shoppers and anyone who lives in their browser.
How to try it
- Install the ChatGPT desktop app, then go to Settings > Computer Use and install the extension for your browser.
- For quick questions, open the side chat from the toolbar (Cmd+Shift+. on macOS), or right-click a page and choose Ask ChatGPT. Highlight a passage to ask about just that part.
- For tasks, start a Work chat and type something like: "@Chrome open our CRM and update the Acme account from these call notes."
- Keep the per-site prompt on. Avoid 'Allow for all sites' unless you trust every site you have open.
Plan & availability: ChatGPT browser extension for Chrome, Edge, Brave, Opera and Vivaldi; side chat isn't in Opera.
