Check which plugins, hooks and MCP servers your agent loads
Plugins can bundle hooks and MCP servers, and hooks run commands on your machine, so it is worth knowing exactly what your coding agent loads in a session. Both Claude Code and OpenAI Codex have built-in commands that show it. This guide lists them from the official Claude Code and Codex docs, checked November 5, 2026, and shows how to turn off anything you didn’t mean to install.
1. List plugins in Claude Code
In a session, run /plugin and open the Installed tab to see each plugin with its scope. From your shell, claude plugin list prints the same list with Version, Scope and Status lines. Plugins you haven’t used lately appear under Not used recently.
claude plugin list2. List hooks and MCP servers in Claude Code
/hooks lists every hook registered for the session, grouped by event. /mcp shows each MCP server, its connection status and whether you approved it for this project; claude mcp list prints a health status per server. /context shows what each loaded item adds to the context window.
claude mcp list /hooks /context3. List plugins in Codex
In Codex CLI, /plugins opens the plugin browser, grouped by marketplace. Open a plugin to inspect it, uninstall it, or press Space on an installed plugin to turn it on or off.
codex /plugins4. List hooks and MCP servers in Codex
Use /hooks in the CLI to see hook sources, review new or changed hooks, trust them or disable individual ones. codex mcp list shows configured servers, and /mcp in the TUI shows the active ones.
codex mcp list /hooks /mcp
Where hooks and servers come from
Claude Code reads hooks from the hooks key in settings.json; only plugins load a separate hooks/hooks.json. Project MCP servers live in .mcp.json at the repository root and need a one-time approval. A plugin can also bring its own hooks and MCP servers, which is why Anthropic says to read a plugin’s details before installing it.
Codex looks for hooks in hooks.json or inline [hooks] tables in config.toml, in ~/.codex/ and in the repository’s .codex/. Enabled plugins can bundle hooks too. MCP servers are [mcp_servers.<name>] tables in config.toml.
Codex reviews hooks before they run
Codex requires you to review and trust each non-managed hook before it runs, and records trust against the hook’s hash, so a new or changed hook is skipped until you trust it again. Plugin hooks go through the same review. Project hooks load only when the project’s .codex/ folder is trusted. Managed hooks set by an organization are trusted by policy and can’t be disabled from the hook browser.
Turn off what you don’t want
In Claude Code, disable or uninstall a plugin from the Installed tab in /plugin, or from the shell with claude plugin disable or claude plugin uninstall and the plugin name. For a plugin the repository’s .claude/settings.json enables, Claude Code asks whether to disable it just for you or uninstall it for everyone. Plugins at Managed scope come from your organization and can’t be changed there.
In Codex, set enabled = false on an MCP server table to switch it off without deleting it, toggle plugins with Space in /plugins, and disable individual hooks in /hooks.
Moving servers between agents
Claude Code and Codex store MCP servers in different formats, JSON and TOML. If you rebuild your setup after a cleanup, our MCP config generator writes the right block for each agent from one server definition.
Tips
- Check /plugin or /plugins after installing any tool that says it sets up your agent for you.
- Run /context to see which MCP tools and subagents are taking up context.
- Keep project hooks and .mcp.json in version control so changes show up in code review.
- Disable MCP servers you don’t use; their tool descriptions still load into context.
